VSPAN Scholarship Program
Approved August 9, 2008
To provide financial assistance to perianesthesia nurses and student nurses
aspiring to enhance their abilities to contribute to the perianesthesia
community by:
(1) Seeking a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing, or
a Doctorate in Nursing
(2) Certification for CPAN or CAPA,
(3) Attendance at the annual VSPAN Conference
I. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctorate
in Nursing (will evaluate for implementation Oct 2009)
II.
CPAN or CAPA Certification Exam: $150.00 for one CPAN and $150.00 for one CAPA
III.VSPAN State
Conference Attendance: registration fees for one student and one RN member.

Eligibility
Nurses from all phases of Perianesthesia nursing who meet the following criteria
are eligible for scholarships.
The RN candidate must:
• Be a registered nurse with a current license
• Be an “Active” category member of ASPAN and a component for the past two full
years prior to application
• Be employed in any phase of the Perianesthesia setting (PACU, ASU,
Preanesthesia, management, research, education).
• VSPAN Conference Attendance scholarship applicant: may not be a current member
of the Board of Directors of VSPAN
*Winners are expected to write a short report of their experience at state
conference for submission to the VSPAN Board of Directors and publication in The
Vital Times.
The Student nurse must:
• Be an enrolled student in an RN program in Virginia
Selection
•
Application may be
submitted from Oct 1st to July 1st of each year
• A VSPAN Selection Committee will review and evaluate the applications and
select scholarship recipients using an objective point system by July 31st
of each year
• Scholarship recipients will be notified by mail
• Only one scholarship will be awarded per recipient.
• Scholarship funds to attend a conference must be applied within a period of
one year from the date awarded.
• The names of the recipients will be published in VSPAN’s newsletter
Vital Times and submitted for
publication to ASPAN’s newsletter
Breathline.
• Scholarships will be awarded with the understanding that the same fees are not
covered by any other source (i.e., employer, other component organizations,
other scholarships).
• Moneys will be administered to the provider institutions (IE VSPAN, ABPANC)
upon the request of the recipient.
• Applicants who receive a scholarship may not reapply for a period of 2 full
years in any category
• The decision of the Selection Committee is final.
* All scholarship recipients are recognized during the VSPAN luncheon at State
Conference.
The following materials must be submitted for:
I. Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing or Doctorate in
Nursing
Scholarship
A. Completed and signed application form. Attach a photocopy of current ASPAN
membership card and nursing license.
B. Brief Resume/Curriculum Vitae — no more than 2 pages — professional
background, continuing education participation, professional publications or
presentations, honors, awards.
C. An official verification letter — A letter from your college's Department of
Nursing, signed by a titled person in that office, that MUST include the
following information:
1. Verification of your current enrollment in one of these degree programs:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, or Doctorate in
Nursing;
D A narrative statement describing
your level of activity/involvement in any phase of Perianesthesia Nursing, ASPAN,
VSPAN and/or component, or your community. Describe how you see your
perianesthesia practice changing and benefiting as a result of your Bachelor of
Science in Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing or Doctorate in
Nursing degree, and how receiving this scholarship will contribute towards your
professional goals and contribute to the perianesthesia community. (maximum 1
page,
typed).
II. Certification Exam Scholarship
A. Completed and signed application form. Attach a photocopy of current ASPAN
membership card and nursing license.
B. Brief Resume/Curriculum Vitae — no more than 2 pages — professional
background, continuing education participation, professional publications or
presentations, honors, awards.
C. Verification letter from your place of employment stating that you are
employed in Perianesthesia practice.
D. A narrative statement describing your level of activity/involvement in any
phase of perianesthesia nursing, ASPAN and/or component, or your community.
Describe how you see certification benefiting your perianesthesia practice.
III. Conference Attendance Fees for RN and student nurse submits:
A. Completed and signed application form.
B. An official verification letter from your place of employment stating that
you are employed in Perianesthesia practice or from your nursing school
verifying your enrollment
C. A brief narrative of how attending the conference will support your
professional development.

VSPAN’s scholarship application cannot be submitted electronically. Instructions
are available online.

All submissions must be in printed format (word-processed or typewritten) and
all items completed and signed where indicated. All required supporting
documentation must accompany the application. Do not submit double-sided copies.
4.
Narrative statements are heavily weighted in the selection process. Consider
your statements carefully. Narratives are rated based on content, clarity and
relationship to VSPAN’s Purpose and Values.
5.
Incomplete applications, late applications or those responses that either fail
to meet or exceed the requirements are not eligible for review.

DEADLINE: Applications must be postmarked on or before July 1st of each year, no exceptions.
